2018 ALASKA PENINSULA MAY

2018 WRANGELLS Recap
Weather: The first 3 days were pretty good weather then the rain started and continued for 21 days. Miserable for the guides and hunters but very productive. August was some of the worst weather we can remember and September was the best one yet.
Moose: We were 100% on Moose opportunity. Moose were abundant. Smallest was 53” largest was a 65” beauty. The forecast for 2019 is excellent. We have a healthy moose population.
Moose/Grizzly Combination First took both. Second client took Moose but ran out of time for grizzly.
Moose/Mt Goat Combination Client took both
Sheep: The three 2018 rams were 8, 8, and 12 years old. In our past experience the other 8 year old rams in the area are 37-39”. A 40” ram can come out of any of the three areas listed below.
This was our 3rd year at 100% success. The smallest being 37.5 to the largest 45 2/8 .
#1 44 6/8” X 40 5/8” 177 B&C Green
#2 40” x 39 3/8” 157 B&C
#3 38 6/8”
Grizzlies Grizzlies are abundant, we see good numbers all season. Most of our sightings are above timberline. There are plenty in the valleys but there is much better cover for them. Our moose kills attract bears pretty quickly. We get 2 out of 3 off the moose kills. Sizes range from 7’ to almost 9’.
Mtn Goats We have enough goats to sustain a harvest of 2 per year. Sometimes they are only a day hunt from the spike camp other times it can be a multi day back pack hunt. The one goat hunter we had this year took a 9 6/8” Billy.
Our Staff I could not ask for a better group. My guides have many years with us. The senior guide has been with us for 23 years the next one 18 then 8 and 6. The packers Grace and Alana are great. Alana and her husband Mike, who is one of the guides, have extensive guiding and packing experience in Wyoming. Grace was raised around horses and just finished her second year and is plenty capable of taking a pack string out herself. My horses are first rate. Even tempered stout horses. We spare no expense in their well being and off season care.
Why We Are Successful
We are a low volume specialized guiding operation. We have good game populations and proactively keep those numbers in mind when determining the volume of hunters we will take. We have been in the Alaska Big Game Guiding business over 40 years now. The experience shows when you hunt with us.
